GEH DENKEN IN DRESDEN

Posted on 2009.02.11 at 15:28

AMAZING! Just like their new album "Images Of Sigrid"; France seems to be producing quite a lot of great tunes recently (just look at Joy Disaster and Frustration's album "Relax"!). Poni Hoax's music is so complex and variable that one doesn't get a "complete" impression from just one track though. I'd love to see them live one day.

After having talked about NOIR DÉSIR with [info]talulla_rose, I just noticed that I didn't "loose" the two albums by them I once had...

So I'm right now listening to their 2001-work "Des Visages Des Figures" and really enjoy its silent, somehow experimental style. I don't know why, but I somehow expected their music to be a lot more commercial than this CD is, and realize that I never really paid attention to them.

The two songs that accompanied this entry are "Des Armes" and "L'Apparetement". Really intense tunes I'd say...
Des Armes )
I love: the voice, and the way how the song fades out so silently after its "explosion" right at the beginning.

I especially recommend the "The Post-Punk Legacy" and the "Notes From the New Underground"-series as well as the single collections "Amethyst After Dark: Orchestral Trip-Hop", "Skeletal Remains: 80's British Goth", "Le Cabaret Des Ombres: An Evening of Cabaret Influenced Music" and "An Age Remembered: A Steampunk and Neo-Victorian Mix".

All songs are faded into each other, and all compilations make great CD-R samplers. ;)

Go for it if you're interested in Post Punk & related tunes, I discovered some great bands through this resource! And the websites provides a lot of information on various bands as well.

I really hope that CONTROL will be successfull, and that it helps to make people re-discover this band, it's SO worth it. Unfortunatly, but not at all surprisingly, the movie doesn't run in my city, but I hope I'll be able to watch it nevertheless. :)

...is a song by PONI HOAX, and certainly one of the most intense listening-experiences I had during the last couple of months. I love how sound, singing and lyrics interact and fit into each other, how all this conveys a feeling of tension and paranoia.

Like a walking dog shifting by the flow,
Easy slider wants to blow in Budapest.
This endless feeling follows ghostly,
And vicious as a plague you know where we are now?
In Budapest.
A chest with no breath creeping through a darkness,
An iced game of chess melting in Budapest.
Building a gambling house in my head,
Near the castle a cold hunter lays,
In Budapest.

Now watch out, it's coming on.

Tokaj running in my veins,
What was soaking is now croaking in Budapest.
Sniper holes across partitions of my soul,
Street-cars tearing up the skies of Budapest.
Travestied gods, transyvanian guns,
I do hear and see surely I should run far from Budapest.
Cave-accordeons they taste my flesh,
And in fast motion, men are mean, mean, mean, mean and mesh.
In Budapest.
I may have a fex contacts but no peace I could find,
And the burning synagogues are lightning up all,
Of Budapest !
Paranoid express through excess and excess,
Here I am just a guest who doesn't need to be blessed,
In Budapest.

Now watch out, it's coming on.

Paranoid express take a deep breath,
I don't wanna be blessed,
I don't wanna be blessed.
Suicide lusts and none is really to trust,
I am the hider, the midnight rider.

take a listen (myspace)

...and that's part of my Budapest, a lighter one, since there are no pictures of the rainy night that felt pretty much like that song:

We never really figured out what all those shoes stood for, but there are artifical puddles around them, what makes them look very much like a memorial for those who drowned in the Danube.
Budapest is a lot about being overwhealmingly beautiful and nightmarish at the same time - at least that's what it was to me.

Hahaha, the new Christian Death-album is the worst piece of music I've come across during the last two years! I'm right now listening to it for the... uhm... sixth?! time and am preparing interview-questions for an article I have to do for the forthcoming issue of Gothic Magazine. It feels like a brain cell is dying every minute. Not only the music is a weird kind of Soft-Metal (some refrains try to be catchy enough to get some radioairplay I guess) with horrible vocals by both Valor and Maitri, but also the lyrics are so stupid I can easily imagine a 15-year old as author...

"Dear Lord, I regret my Sins, Dear Lord, I regret my Sins / I’m the Victim I the Victim I’m the Victim / And you make me watch / I’m the Victim I’m the Victim I’m the Victim / And you make me watch / But Lord if what I see is only in my mind / Then why? do you make me watch / But Lord if what I see is only in my mind / Then why? do you make me watch / Make me watch / I promise to be good / Really really good / I promise to be really really reallly really / Good / BUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH A LITTLE FUN / WHAT’S WRONG, WHAT’S WRONG / SO WHAT’S WRONG WITH A LITTLE / I PROMISE NOT TO HURT ANYONE / SO WHAT’S WRONG / ... "

...you get the idea. All those repetitions are the most annoying thing about them - I admit I like loads of bands who's lyrics shouldn't be thought about at all, but this one feels as braindamaging as chat shows on TV.

I discussed the whole "work of art" with a friend who in some morbid way still feels attached to the newer Christian Death-outputs (and who in contrast to me has a good idea of the band's development after the depart of Mr. Williams), and in his opinion, "American Inquisition" is a lot better than some of the stuff Valor put out in the 90ies. Well, I'm pretty sure I'll never ever voluntarily listen to those albums.

Some new releases that a worth getting some attention:

"The Palest Grey" by SCARLET'S REMAINS - even more breathtaking than their debut; "Bitter Cold in a Dry Season" is such a classic deathrock-song... I so love her singing on "The Mystical East"... "The Sarifice" and "Children Write On Missiles" will certainly be played at clubs A LOT... and with "Anatomie der Selbstzerstörung" there's a new German song with weird lyrics on the album.
-> their myspace-page

"Of Whores And Culture" by GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG - their first fulltime-album since what seems like a billion years, not too different from the songs released on the Best Of "Kin-Burst 9104" but much more homogeneous as a whole. I still don't know any band that does the same kind of electronic Goth-/DeathRock (or "Artgoth", as they call it), and I enjoy seeing them live on stage a lot.
-> their myspace

"Still Outcast" by ANTIWORLD has some nice GothPunk-anthems on it as well, and DER FLUCH are by now recording their new album "Geschichten aus der Gruft" that'll feature new versions of their old hits (and possibly three new songs as well). Looking forward to it!

This year's WGT is going to be fantastic! I can't wait to meet all those people I havn't seen for AGES, finally get to know some online "friends" in real life and spend 4-5 days partying and attending great concerts. :D

There have already been a couple of wonderful bands announced, e.g. gorgeous FRANK THE BAPTIST (we'll have some sort of semi-official relase party for their third album "The New Colossus" at Bats Over Kiel the day after tomorrow! :-)), 45 GRAVE (how old are they by now...?!), CINEMA STRANGE (who I've never seen live before), DER FLUCH (more old people :D), FRANKENSTEIN (I love his voice, esp. live on stage), SHADOW REICHENSTEIN, NEW SKIN (though I think they're more pop than goth, anyway planning to go & see them), THE DEEP EYNDE, THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS, VIVE LA FETE (who I sadly missed last year) and ZOMBINA AND THE SKELETONES.

The Gothic Pogo Party is hosting a whole lot of great bands this year as well, e.g. CHARLES DE GAUL and CAUDA PAVONIS! Aaaand [info]cyberpagan_de is spinnig records there on Thursday. Great initiation I'd say! :3

"Dead Radio" by Rowland S. Howard is one of the most beautiful songs I got to know during the last couple of months. I really dig his album "Teenage Snuff" I found at [info]gothmusicshare a while ago; never heard of him before, though according to Wikipedia he was with The Birthday Party, worked with Lydia Lunch etc.

Just found a live-recording of the song at youtube.com, give it a try:
Sometimes it's quite a good thing to be young & ignorant & to still have the opportunity to "discover" lots of great artists; I don't envy guys who pretend to know every band & own every rare vinyl on the world, cause they won't have many of those precious little "discovering-experiences" anymore.

Anyway. I'm still working, won't finish before 2:00 or 3:00 am, drinking liters of coffee, and am by now convinced that the whole universe is made up of exams, interviews & presentations.
Interesting aspects of recent stress:
- article on New Skin, Tori Amos' voice singing to indie-electro songs, quite a nice album, I already liked them & did a short story about them when "Inside of Me" was on Strobelight's third New Dark Age-Compilation.
- potential article on [info]frankthebaptist's new album, I'd love to do the job but havn't got any details on it yet...
- invitation to the world premiere of Schneewittchen's ballet in the opera of Magdeburg - look at their homepage for some free mp3 of old songs.

Just a short note on last.fm: If you ever decide to listen to the Charles De Goal-"Similar Artist Radio", be aware of the fact that it will only spit out songs by Anne Clark, The Danse Society and Kas Product. I've been listening to the whole thing for more than 2 hours now and it didn't change at all (I originally hoped to discover some cool French minimal-bands) - have a look at my recent tracks for convincing proof. *g*

But well, I've always wanted to get to know other songs by the French coldwave-band Kas Product than "So young but so cold", and now I've got them in direct comparison to two pretty famous artists - I won't complain about that. ;-)

So go ahead and check them out if you fancy some cool electro/wave-tunes!

I also noticed that The Danse Society actually did some cool songs (I liked "Looking Through" a few minutes ago), but that Anne Clark's voice really gets on my nerves when listening to it for too long - thank you, last.fm!
